Members Provide Perspective to City Council Regarding Decisions Affecting Durham’s Youth;

Applications Available Beginning March 15

DURHAM, N.C. – Durham youth who want a voice in their City government are now being invited to apply to serve for a one-year term on the 2010-2011 Durham Youth Commission.

Beginning Monday, March 15, interested youth are encouraged to download an application from the City’s Web site. The Durham Youth Commission consists of 30 members from grades 9–12 chosen by a selection committee composed of the City staff members and residents of Durham. Durham Youth Commission members commit to a one-year term of service; serve on City boards and committees as appointed and attend all meetings of those boards and committees; complete 20 hours of community service during their one-year term of service; as well as attend and actively participate in all meetings, service projects, and special events sponsored by the Durham Youth Commission.

Durham youth interested in submitting an application must reside within the corporate city limits; express an interest in contributing to the greater well-being of the City of Durham; commit to 100 percent participation in all activities; demonstrate leadership in school and/or community activities; and complete the required application with two reference letters by Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 4:30 p.m.

Beginning March 15, interested youth may download an application from the City’s Web site at www.durhamnc.gov/council/dyc.cfm. Applications will also be available at Durham One Call in the lobby of City Hall; Durham Public Schools middle and high school guidance counselor offices; Durham County Public Library Main Branch at 300 North Roxboro Street; and all Durham Parks & Recreation Centers.
