Durham Sponsors Paper Shredding & Electronics Recycling at Earth Day

Free Collection Event Open to All Durham Residents and Businesses

DURHAM, N.C. - "Going green" just got even easier at this year's Durham
Earth Day Festival, thanks in part to the City of Durham's plans to
offer free paper shredding and electronics recycling.

The City's Department of Solid Waste Management and Sonoco Recycling are
co-sponsoring the free confidential paper shredding and used electronic
collection event at this year's annual festival, which will take place
on Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the intersection
of Corcoran and Main Streets in downtown Durham.

Shredding guidelines are:

* Paper accepted for shredding may contain paper clips and
staples.

* Hanging file folders will not be accepted.

For electronics recycling, nearly anything with a cord will be accepted,
including:

* Computers, laptops, keyboards, mouse, printers, monitors,
speakers, copiers, scanners, circuit boards, hard drives, computer
parts, etc.

* Stereo equipment, tape players, receivers, amplifiers, record
players, speakers, etc.

* Kitchen electronics, such as microwaves, mixers, blenders,
choppers, etc.

*         Televisions

* Telephones, cell phones, and fax machines

* Hair dryers, curling irons, and vacuum cleaners

* Power tools, cordless tools, etc.

Not accepted: large appliances, refrigerators, air conditioners, or
anything with Freon.

The event is open to both Durham residents and businesses. Due to
street closures at the festival, vehicles dropping off recyclables must
approach from the south on Corcoran Street to unload.

All the collected paper and electronics will be recycled, which will
impact the department's bottom line in landfill fees. According to
Donald Long, director of the City's Department of Solid Waste
Management, last year the City spent about $450,000 on landfill fees for
paper that could have been recycled. "Recycling is an easy way that
residents can have a direct impact on the amount of money the City
spends on disposal, freeing up money for other programs," Long said.

All types of clean and dry paper products are accepted the entire year
in the blue curbside carts, such as newspapers and inserts, magazines,
catalogs, office paper, greeting cards, telephone books, cereal boxes,
junk mail, envelopes (even those with plastic windows), yellow pages,
paperback books, corrugated cardboard, and shredded paper (in a paper
bag before placing in the cart).
