Durham Receives "Tree City USA" Award at 2010 Arbor Day Ceremony

DURHAM, N.C. - On Saturday, April 24, the City of Durham will officially
receive its 27th consecutive "Tree City USA" Award from the National
Arbor Day Foundation (NADF) at the City's 2010 Arbor Day Ceremony.

The event, beginning at 10 a.m. in Northgate Park, which located at 300
W. Club Boulevard, Durham, is being hosted by the City's Urban Forestry
Division in the Department of General Services and the Northgate Park
Neighborhood Association (NPNA).

The ceremony will begin with short violin performances by Suzuki Talent
Education at Durham (STEAD) and Morehead Montessori Suzuki Violins. The
award will then be presented to the City by Durham County Ranger Wayne
Williams, and received by City Councilwoman Diane Catotti along with
NPNA Representative Cheryl Shiflett.

After the award ceremony, the City and NPNA will hold tree-related
demonstrations and activities as well as information-sharing with
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborists from
Davey Tree Service, Bartlett Tree Experts, and Aerial Innovations. In
addition, a limited number of tree seedlings will be given away by
Durham's Tahkai Project.

In order to receive the "Tree City USA" recognition, the City met four
standards, including a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance,
a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
Durham is one of only 71 "Tree Cities" in North Carolina. The Tree City
USA program is sponsored by NADF in cooperation with the National
Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
