Fast Facts:

· In an effort to promote employee and employer growth this year, the Durham JobLink Career Center is hosting the Durham Career Conference 2010 for the first time at Northgate Mall. The conference is free to all Durham residents and employers.

· Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell and County Commissioner Brenda Howerton will attend the April 30th opening session to present certificates of appreciation to the N.C. Department of Commerce and to Northgate Mall & Associates. The N.C. Department of Commerce and Northgate Mall & Associates are being recognized for their support in the "Northgate Project," in which Northgate Mall provided the on-site space and the N.C. Department of Commerce the use of the JobLink Mobile Unit.

· Beginning with the opening session on Friday, April 30, the "5-Step Challenge" will be explained to conference attendees and why it is critical they participate in all five steps. According to Tanya Spaulding-Hill, manager for the Durham JobLink Career Center, many jobseekers are often lacking at least two of the steps noted below, which often delays or prevents job placement.

o Step 1 - Workshops for jobseekers with topics ranging from career portfolio and imaging to job search strategies to dressing for success. Workshops tailored for employers will cover topics including human resources law, the value of older workers, and sustainability and strategic planning.

o Step 2 - Videotaped mock interviews where participants will also be able to view their session and receive a constructive review from the person conducting the interview.

o Step 3 - Virtual Résumé Bank is an opportunity for job seekers to leave their résumés with Durham JobLink if they cannot attend Career Day. Durham JobLink will then forward the résumé to appropriate employers with job vacancies. Durham residents may also leave their résumé at the Information Table during conference hours.

o Step 4 - Career Day where employers with job vacancies will be present and accepting résumés as well as conducting preliminary interviews.

o Step 5 - Follow-up sessions at the Durham JobLink Career Center where conference attendees will have access to assistance with mailing follow-up letters and e-mails to potential employers they connected with during Career Day.

· In addition to the Career Conference, the Durham JobLink Mobile Unit will also be available for express job searching in the Northgate Stadium 10 parking lot on May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18.
