Hi Laura:

A good portion of the medical waste incinerated by Stericycle comes from
medical facilities located in Durham County! Please spread the word.

Many thanks!

Sue

Subject: Thank you for your letter to the NC DENR Division of Air Quality
(NCDENR/DAQ) requesting a public hearing for the permit renewal for
Stericyle.

Dear Parents, Friends and Neighbors:

Stericycle is a medical waste facility located in Haw River, NC, where
medical waste from 23 states is shipped to Alamance County to be
incinerated, polluting our air, land and soil. Air pollutants released from
Stericycle¹s two incinerators each year include mercury, lead, cadmium,
chromium, dioxin, furans, beryllium, chlorine, formaldehyde, nitrogen oxide,
hydrogen chloride, and other air pollutants known to cause cancer, birth
defects and developmental disabilities. Unborn babies, infants and children
are at special risk from exposure to certain air toxics such as lead,
mercury and dioxins. Emissions from Stericycle also pollute the Haw River
posing a risk to our drinking water and wildlife. Orange, Durham and Chatham
counties may also be affected by these pollutants. In fact, 24% of all
medical waste incinerated at Stericycle comes from medical and research
facilities in Durham County.

On behalf of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League and the Haw River
Assembly, we invite you to attend the public hearing on the permit renewal
for the Stericycle medical waste incinerator on Tuesday, May 25, at 6 p.m.
at Alamance Community College (ACC) in the auditorium.

We will also be hosting a community informational meeting this coming
Monday, May 17, at 7 p.m. also held at ACC in the auditorium, where we will
be giving a brief presentation on the impacts of the incinerator on the
health of surrounding communities, and specific issues to be addressed under
the permit.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Dear Parents, Friends and Neighbors:

Hello! We are writing to thank you for your letter sent to the NC DENR
Division of Air Quality (NCDENR/DAQ) requesting a public hearing for the
permit renewal for the Stericycle medical waste incinerator located in Haw
River, NC.

Thanks to your request, the NCDENR/DAQ has agreed to host a public hearing
on the permit renewal for Stericycle. The public hearing will take place on
Tuesday, May 25, at 6 p.m. at the Alamance Community College auditorium,
located at 1247 Jimmie Kerr Rd. in Graham, NC 27253. Directions: I-85/I-40,
Exit 150.

Please consider speaking at the hearing. The DENR/DAQ will issue its
decision to renew Stericycle¹s permit based on your comments, and from
members of the public who may be affected by emissions from the incinerator.
If you would like to comment please come at least 15 minutes early, and sign
in on the sign-up sheet to speak. Each person will be given 3-minutes to
speak. Written comments of any length can be submitted until June 1, sent
via email to:
Gautam.patniak at ncdenr.gov or by mail to: NC DENR/DAQ, 1641 Mail Service
Center,
Raleigh, NC 27699-1641.

A community informational meeting will take place on Monday, May 17, at 7
p.m. (prior to the public hearing) also at the Alamance Community College
auditorium. The community informational meeting will be hosted by the Blue
Ridge Environmental Defense League and the Haw River Assembly. We will be
giving a short presentation about the incinerator¹s impacts to people¹s
health and the environment, and will be discussing important issues to
consider supporting, such as the recent resolution proposed by the
Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners that requires ALL medical waste
incinerators in NC to come into compliance with the new and more protective
EPA standards for toxic air pollutants by 2012 instead of 2014

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting on Monday, May 17, at the
Alamance Community College auditorium at 7 p.m. If you cannot attend, we
will look forward to seeing you at the public hearing on Tuesday, May 25, at
6 p.m. at the same location. Thank you for your part in supporting clean
air, water and a healthy environment, so essential to our health and
well-being.

Sincerely yours,

Sue Dayton, Statewide Coordinator
