Public Health Seeks Residents' Input for Health Assessment

June 11, 2010

Durham, NC - Durham County public health officials and the Partnership for a Healthy Durham are teaming up to conduct the 2011 Community Health Assessment. The assessment process is routinely conducted every four years as a part of the Durham County Health Department's public health strategic planning.

To complete the Community Health Assessment, public health staff and selected volunteers will conduct door-to-door community perception surveys on Thursday, June 17 through Sunday, June 20. The surveys will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Surveyors will be easily identifiable. They will wear bright orange shirts that read Durham Community Health Assessment. Surveyors will also wear an identification badge.

"The information collected from the short community perception surveys is invaluable," said Mel Downey-Piper, Durham County Government's Coordinator for the Partnership for a Healthy Durham. "We encourage residents to participate in this survey to increase our understanding of the most pressing health issues facing our residents and help us to better address their needs."

Using census data and GIS technology, 210 households will be selected at random to participate in the survey. The survey is approximately 15-20 minutes. Information collected will be entered into a handheld device during the survey. Questions asked on the survey will focus on identifying the major community and health problems in the county, access to healthcare, emergency preparedness, and personal demographics. All data collected from the survey is anonymous and will not be linked to the individual.

Once the surveys are completed, secondary data will be used to complete a comprehensive report that will be released to the community in early 2012. The secondary data will focus on Durham County's eight health priorities which are access to healthcare, adolescent pregnancy, HIV/STDs, infant mortality, injury prevention, mental health and substance abuse, and obesity and chronic illness.

A public community health forum meeting will follow the release of the comprehensive report.
