Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the June 21, 2010 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Friday, June 25 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch
on-demand at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City Council Approves $353.4 Million Budget

A new $353.4 million budget is now in place for Durham for FY2010-2011.
The City Council-approved spending plan includes a 1.19 cents property
tax increase, which will raise the average annual tax bill by $19.24.
The increase will be used to help pay for voter-approved debt service
requirements and to increase support for the Durham Area Transit
Authority (DATA). The new budget also includes a small number of other
increases in various rates and fees. The new budget goes into effect on
July 1, as do most of the fee and rate increases.

Audit Shows Sound Fiscal Management of Federal Stimulus Funds

The City Council accepted the results of an internal audit, which show
Durham is responsibly managing its share of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act funds. While some improvements in general record
keeping practices were recommended as a result of the audit, the report
shows that the City is doing a good job of managing its money. Audit
Services Director Germaine Brewington explains why the audit had to be
conducted on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Free Shuttle Service Connecting Durham's Urban Core Approved

The City Council approved a contract establishing a new shuttle service
between Downtown, Golden Belt, Ninth Street, and Duke University and
Hospital. Made possible through a partnership with Duke, the shuttle
service will be provided free of charge to anyone traveling to points
along the route. The first two years of funding for the service will be
paid for through grants obtained by the City and Duke.

Triangle Transit Assumes DATA's Day-to-Day Operations Oct. 1

The management of Durham's public transit system will now be handled by
Triangle Transit. Under the terms of the agreement approved by the City
Council, the City will continue to be responsible for all costs
associated with operating the Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA), but
Triangle Transit will be responsible for its day-to-day operations. The
City's Transportation Department expects the change to help the system
operate more efficiently. Triangle Transit is expected to take over
management on October 1.
