Durham Launches New Development Tracking Map

New Website Shows Locations of Billboards, Cemeteries, and Communication
Towers in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents and developers now have access to a new,
mapping website designed to give both the location and information about
every billboard, cemetery, or communication tower in Durham County.

Thanks to efforts by the Research Section of the Durham City-County
Planning Department and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Division of the City's Department of Technology Solutions, the new
website enables easier searching for these records by either type or
street address.

According to T.E. Austin, planning supervisor with the Durham
City-County Planning Department, interdepartmental cooperation has
yielded a searchable database that has been in demand for quite some
time. "Before this database existed, anyone looking for this type of
information had to go to several sources, some of which were only
available in our office," Austin said. "Now, you can simply search for
this information online. Through innovative cooperation and technology,
this new database will provide improved service to the residents of
Durham."

According to Marcus Bryant, GIS manager with the City's Department of
Technology Solutions, the capabilities of the database will only broaden
in the future. "The plan is to incorporate additional search criteria
and selections to the new mapping service, including zoning map changes,
site plans, and more," Bryant said.

To view the new mapping site, visit the Durham City-County Planning
Department webpage and select "Development Tracking Map" or directly at
www.gisweb.durhamnc.gov/durhammaps/planning/viewer/index.html. For
additional information about the new mapping site, contact Tyler Waring,
GIS analyst with the City's Department of Technology Solutions, at (919)
560-4137, extension 28218 or via e-mail at tyler.waring at durhamnc.gov.
