DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the August 16, 2010 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Saturday, August 21 at 10 a.m. and will also be available to

Second Quarter Crime Numbers Released

The Police Department's Second Quarter Crime Report shows a six percent
increase in index crime compared to the first half of last year, but an
overall decrease in those numbers since the first quarter of this year.
Index crime is the total number of violent and property crimes. The
report also reflects a four percent increase in violent crimes and a
seven percent increase in property crimes compared to January-June,
2009. Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. explains what the department is
doing to combat these numbers on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This
Week."

Grant to Help Control Polluted Run-off in Two Watersheds

The City Council approved the acceptance of a $133,938 Non-Point Source
Pollution Control Grant from the North Carolina Department of
Environment and Natural Resources. The grant will allow the City to
control polluted runoff through the installation of approximately 20
residential rain gardens in each of the Northeast Creek and Third Fork
Creek watersheds. Stormwater Services Public Education Coordinator Laura
Smith explains what rain gardens are and how they are expected to help
mitigate pollution in these watersheds on the upcoming episode of "City
Hall This Week."

City Council Approves New Regulations Governing Bicycle Parking in
Durham

More specific regulations guiding the accessibility of bicycle parking
in Durham are now in place. The City Council adopted new regulations
included in a text amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance that
will tailor the number of bicycle spaces required by new development to
fit the purpose of the business. The previous broad-based requirements
often resulted in too many spaces at some businesses and not enough at
others. Durham City-County Planning Assistant Director Keith Luck
explains how this change is expected to help make Durham a more
bicycle-friendly city on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

City Takes Next Step Toward Improving Water Reclamation Facilities

The City Council approved a $2,341,081 engineering contract for
oversight of the water reclamation facilities' master plans project. The
project will help the North and South Durham Water Reclamation
Facilities meet new regulations already adopted for Jordan Lake and soon
to be enacted for Falls Lake. The new facilities and upgrades are
expected to be in place before the compliance deadlines have to be met.

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

City Connector service will offer a unique experience for riders
