Durham Opens New R. Kelly Bryant, Jr. Pedestrian Bridge

Downtown Gateway Bridge Now Open; Dedication Ceremony September 16th

DURHAM, N.C. - The long-awaited opening of the new R. Kelly Bryant, Jr.
Pedestrian Bridge is now a reality, with a special dedication ceremony
planned next week to commemorate the occasion.

The City of Durham has officially opened the new bridge, which links
residential and commercial areas divided by N.C. Highway 147 and also
links those areas to existing and future trails.

A special dedication ceremony in honor of R. Kelly Bryant, Jr. is
planned for Thursday, September 16, 2010, beginning at 6 p.m. The
ceremony will take place on the Lakeland Street side of the bridge and
the first 100 ceremony attendees will receive vouchers for free food and
entertainment after the ceremony at the T.A. Grady Recreation Center,
located at 531 Lakeland Street. Speakers at the ceremony include Mayor
William V. "Bill" Bell, North Carolina Board of Transportation Member
Chuck Watts, City Councilman J. Michael Woodard, and R. Kelly Bryant,
Jr. Limited parking will be available in the faculty parking lot next to
the Burton Magnet Elementary School, located at 1500 Mathison Street.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) provided most of
the funding for the pedestrian bridge with money remaining from the
original N.C. 147 Durham Freeway Project. The project cost $2.2 million
with 80 percent of the funding from the NCDOT and the City picking up
the additional 20 percent, which was approved in the 2008-2009 fiscal
year budget. To learn more about the history of this project, visit the
City's website at
