Durham Hosts Teen Center Ribbon-Cutting Sept. 25

New Center Prepares Teens to Effectively Meet the Challenges of
Adolescence

DURHAM, N.C. - For the first time in Durham, a space especially designed
by and for Durham's teens is now open, with an official ribbon-cutting
ceremony planned for Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 10 a.m.

The $950,000 Durham Teen Center, located at 1101 Cornell Street, is a
3,400 square foot building the City of Durham renovated next to the
Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park. With the
capacity to host 100 teens at any given time, registered teens between
the ages of 13 and 19 now have free access to the center from 2:30 p.m.
until 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Speakers at Saturday's ribbon-cutting include City of Durham Mayor Pro
Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden, Durham Youth Commission President Alex
Catotti, and Durham Teen Center Manager Evelyn Scott. After the
ribbon-cutting ceremony, event attendees will enjoy light refreshments
and be able to tour the inside of the new center. As part of the
ribbon-cutting festivities, the Durham Youth Commission will be hosting
the North Carolina Youth Council Service Learning Conference, with at
least 75 participants from across the state attending the event.

According to Cole-McFadden, numerous City agencies and community
organizations supported the need for a facility that addresses the
unique needs of teens during out-of-school hours. "The Durham Teen
Center provides our teens with a positive alternative to spending time
on the streets or being home alone," Cole-McFadden said. "It offers an
opportunity to develop decision-making abilities, build character, gain
valuable leadership skills, plan projects, and increase their
appreciation for service to our community."

The Durham Teen Center is divided into two main areas - one specifically
designed for quiet activities, such as studying or working on one of
three computers with Internet access, with the other side equipped with
a television, video gaming equipment, a stereo, and ping-pong table. The
outdoor and indoor color scheme, selected by Durham Youth Commission
members, was used in the creation of the "graffiti" artwork that adorns
both the inside and outside walls.
