New "City Hall This Week" Begins Tonight

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, September 24 on DTV8; All Previous Episodes "On Demand" on the City's DTV8 Website

 

DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the September 20, 2010 Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."  The show will begin airing on Friday, September 24 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on-demand at www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm. 

 

City Council Approves Economic Development Incentives for Greenfire Development

The City Council approved a major economic incentive agreement with Greenfire Development for the redevelopment of the Hill Building.  The $4,213,000 incentive package would be paid over the course of 16 years beginning in FY2013 and ending in FY2028.  Greenfire's $52 million project will center on a 165-room four-star property that would include a restaurant, a rooftop pool, café, spa, fitness center, retail space, and meeting rooms.  Office of Economic and Workforce Development Director Kevin Dick explains why the City believes such an investment will be beneficial to downtown on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

 

Grant to Support Green Job Training Program for Young Parents

An innovative new green jobs training program is taking shape in Durham.  A grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Wal-Mart Foundation will enable the City and Builders of Hope to help make sure young parents have the skills necessary to support their families.  The City Council approved a $280,400 contract with the organization to implement the program.  It will provide green construction training for up to 60 young parents and expectant mothers to make them more employable in high-demand occupations.

 

City Council Continues Support for Documentary Arts

Furthering the documentary arts will continue to remain a priority for Durham. The City Council approved a $55,000 contract with the Center for Documentary Studies to help produce the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, as well as several other events throughout the year.  Full Frame has become one of the premiere film festivals in the world and helps to spur economic development downtown. More than 28,000 tickets were distributed for last spring's event.

 

Website Offers Information about 2010 Street Bond Referendum 

The City of Durham is offering voters a chance to become more informed about the upcoming $20 million street bond referendum by visiting www.DurhamOperationGreenlight.org.  The website explains which streets would be repaved if the bond funds are approved and offers an update on all of Durham's street repaving projects. Residents can also visit the website to find out when and where community information sessions will be held through the end of October. Deputy City Manager Ted Voorhees explains why general obligation bonds are considered to be the best way for the City to borrow money, as well as other methods the City could use to address the condition of Durham's streets on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

"City Hall This Week" is a news program dedicated to informing Durham residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall. Each edition is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day after City Council meetings. It airs three times a day on DTV8 (Time Warner Cable channel 8) through the week of the next City Council meeting.
