Strengthening Families Program Offers Parents and Youth Ways to Improve In-home Relationships, October 19

Sessions Proven Effective for Improving Relationships between Parents & Youth
October 15, 2010

Durham, NC -
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP), designed for parents and youth ages 10-14 in grades 6-8, will be hosted by Durham County Cooperative Extension in partnership with Communities in Schools of Durham, beginning Tuesday, October 19. For seven sessions, parents and their middle school-aged youths learn skills to help improve their parent-child relationships using concepts from the evidence-based SFP model. The sessions feature realistic videos, discussions, learning games, and family projects. The parent/caregiver, and youth must attend together. SFP 10-14 has been proven effective in helping parents and youth build better relationships;delaying adolescent substance use and lowering levels of aggression; and increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to set appropriate limits and support their youth. Youth and parents learn and have fun together. Parents are able to strengthen parenting skills in limit setting and discipline. Youth strengthen their communication skills and learn to address challenges like resisting peer pressure. Participants receive a certificate for completing the training. The SFP free of charge to residents and dinner and childcare are provided. Transportation and sessions in Spanish are offered based on request from participants. Interested residents must register for the SFP by contacting Donna Rewalt, community outreach coordinator for the Durham Cooperative Extension, at (919) 560-0538 or via email drewalt at durhamcountync.gov.
