Durham Launches Fair Housing Survey

Survey Seeks to Gather Resident Knowledge of Fair Housing Laws

DURHAM, N.C. - In an effort to assess resident knowledge of fair housing laws, the City of Durham's Human Relations Department wants to hear from you.

Now hosted on the department's webpage, the confidential 28-question online survey is designed to assess how much residents know about their fair housing rights. According to Yvonne Pena, director of the City's Human Relations Department, resident input is extremely important for the department and how it plans to move forward with its outreach efforts. "The answers we receive are going to help us assess our training and educational outreach needs," Pena said. "It's crucial that we assess how much our residents know about fair housing so we can, in turn, fine tune our outreach efforts to be as effective as possible."

According to Peña, the department administers the City's Fair Housing Ordinance and is responsible for enforcement of the City and Federal Fair Housing Laws; processing alleged cases of housing discrimination; and conducting education and training on fair housing issues. "The City's Fair Housing Ordinance is equivalent to federal civil rights law and our staff investigates alleged discrimination in race, religion, color, sex, national origin, familial status, and handicap," Pena said. "By doing this, it enables our department to contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and as a result, receive funding for processing housing complaints and conducting education and outreach. That's why the survey is so important to us being able to effectively conduct educational outreach."

The survey is currently accessible from the department's webpage at www.DurhamNC.gov/departments/relations and will be available until June 2011. For additional information about fair housing rights, residents should contact Delilah Donaldson, manager with the City's Human Relations Department, at (919) 560-4107, ext. 24246 or via e-mail at Delilah.Donaldson at DurhamNC.gov.
