Durham Volunteer Tree Planting Saturday

Green Street to Receive 60 New Trees; Vehicle Traffic Temporarily
Diverted Nov. 6

DURHAM, N.C. - On Saturday, November 6, residents living along Green
Street will have 60 new trees, thanks to the efforts of volunteers from
Duke University and employees with the City of Durham's Urban Forestry
Division.

Beginning at 9 a.m., volunteers from the Society of American Foresters
Duke Student Chapter at Duke University's Nicholas School of the
Environment will gather in the park at Green and Berkeley Streets before
heading out along Green Street to begin planting 60 new trees between
North Buchanan Boulevard and Broad Street.

According to Alex Johnson, manager of the Urban Forestry Division in the
City's General Services Department, the new trees are Sioux Crepe
Myrtles and were chosen because they will blend in with the existing
crepe myrtles along Green Street, whose blossom colors run the gamut
between light purple to red to coral pink.

"Crepe myrtles have held up better than the other species historically
planted along this stretch of street, which made them an ideal choice,"
Johnson said. "Plus, Duke Energy is very particular about what they will
allow to grow under their transmission towers. In fact, their
contractors removed nearly 100 trees the last time they came through in
2008 to clear this easement. These Sioux Crepe Myrtles will be well
within height tolerances when they reach their mature height in 20 years
or so and should blend in well with the existing landscape."

The new trees were purchased using funds donated by the Trinity Heights
Neighborhood Association in partnership with Duke University. "The
neighboring community of Trinity Heights approached our office this past
spring for possible tree planting projects that they could partner with
the City on, and they agreed to the need in this area of Green Street
and supplied the necessary funding to make this planting happen,"
Johnson said.

According to Johnson, vehicular traffic on Green Street between North
Buchanan Boulevard and Broad Street will be temporarily diverted from
8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. while the volunteers plant the new trees. For
more information about Saturday's tree planting, contact Johnson at
(919) 560-4197, ext. 21275 or via e-mail at Alex.Johnson at DurhamNC.gov.
