City Officially Recognizes Matricula Consular as Valid Form of I.D. for
Police Department

The Durham Police Department's practice of accepting the Matricula
Consular as a valid form of identification now has the official support
of the Durham City Council. The identification card is issued by the
Government of Mexico to citizens living outside of the country. It does
not have the same status equal to a North Carolina driver's license and
can be used for identification purposes only. The City Council approved
a resolution supporting recognition of the card as a valid form of
identification for the Durham Police Department, which had already been
using it for that purpose since 2008.

Crime Report Shows Slight Increase in Total Number of Violent and
Property Crimes

The Durham Police Department's Third Quarter Crime Report shows a slight
increase of one percent in the total number of violent and property
crimes during the first nine months of 2010 compared to the same time
period last year. Violent crime was up by seven percent compared to the
first nine months of last year while property crime was down slightly
over the same time period. Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. offers a more in-depth
explanation for those numbers on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This
Week."

Federal Funds Allow Community Learning Center Teen Initiative to Expand
Services

The Community Learning Center Teen Initiative is expanding and building
on its services, thanks to $50,000 in Community Development Block Grant
funds. The Durham Housing Authority will use the funds to support the
initiative, which is an after school-based program for middle-and-high
school-aged youth living in four of the city's public housing
communities. Durham Housing Authority's Resident Services Director
Jo-Ann Davis explains how the program is serving some of Durham's
at-risk youth on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

City Continues Support of Programs Serving Young Criminal Offenders

The City Council approved a $40,000 contract with the Durham County Teen
Court and Restitution Program to continue providing services to young
criminal offenders. The Community Development Block Grant funds will be
used to pay for workshops in anger management and substance abuse
counseling for first-time misdemeanor offenders. Durham County Teen
Court Restitution Program Executive Director Sabrina Cates explains what
Teen Court and the Restitution Program are on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."
