Durham Closing Lanes on N.C. Hwy. 147 for Overnight Pedestrian Bridge
Work December 5

Two Partial Lane Closures May Temporarily Delay Overnight Traffic Sunday
on Durham Freeway

DURHAM, N.C. - Warranty repairs on the lighting system for the R. Kelly
Bryant, Jr. Pedestrian Bridge at Alston Avenue will occur overnight this
Sunday and reduce traffic to one lane in both directions on N.C. Highway
147.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the northbound and southbound
direction from Briggs to Alston Avenues on Sunday, December 5 beginning
at 9 p.m. Both lanes are scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday,
December 6. Motorists are asked to drive with caution while traffic is
reduced to one lane on N.C. Highway 147.

According to Edward Venable, manager of the Engineering and Stormwater
Services Division for the City of Durham's Public Works Department, the
cause of the outage for the lights along the top of the bridge arch is
still under investigation, but engineers feel that it is possible that a
lightning strike caused the problem. "The lighting system is covered by
the warranty agreement and the City will not incur any costs relating to
the repair," Venable said.

The City officially opened the new pedestrian bridge in September 2010,
which links residential and commercial areas divided by N.C. Highway 147
and also links those areas to existing and future trails.

For more information about the pedestrian bridge repair contact Byron
Brady, contract management supervisor with the City's Public Works
Department, at (919) 560-4326, extension 30296 or by e-mail at
Byron.Brady at durhamnc.gov. To learn more about the history of this
project, visit the City's website at
