Landscapes Seminar Offers Guidance for "Greener" Gardens

Registration for Seminar Required by January 18.
January 5, 2011

Durham, NC - Gardeners interested in learning how to create productive garden beds that protect Durham's water quality are encouraged to attend a workshop focusing on sustainable garden management techniques.

On Monday, January 24, 2011, the City of Durham and Durham County Government will host a joint Sustainable Landscapes seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Durham County Cooperative Extension Service, located at 721 Foster Street, Durham.

According to John Cox, water quality manager of the City of Durham Department of Public Works, Stormwater Services Division, sustainable gardening protects local water resources. "This seminar will offer residents simple steps they can perform while gardening at home that help reduce pollution and runoff in local lakes and streams."

"Gardening is a fun activity that engages both the body and mind and connects individuals with nature and their environment," stated Michelle Wallace, agent with the Durham County Cooperative Extension Service. According to Wallace, this workshop will teach residents how to cultivate local, healthy food systems and water resources through discussions about how to manage soil for best results; smart watering techniques; and how to install rain gardens and create raised vegetable beds.
This seminar requires a $25 registration fee and includes lunch for each participant. Registration closes on Tuesday, January 18.
To register for this workshop or for more information, contact Pana Jones, program assistant for the Durham County Cooperative Extension Service, at (919) 560-0525 or by e-mail at prjones at co.durham.nc.us.
