DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the January 18, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Friday, January 21 at 8 p.m. on DTV8 (Time Warner Cable
channel 8) and will also be available to watch on demand at
www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.
Local Housing and Public Service Groups Make Case for Continued Federal
Funding
The City Council is now considering requests for continued federal
funding as it develops the Annual Action Plan for FY 2011-2012. The plan
is Durham's application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development for the upcoming year's funding. During the first of two
public hearings on the development of the plan, more than two dozen
representatives of organizations providing affordable housing, public
services, and assistance to those who are homeless or at risk of
becoming homeless made their case for funding. A second public hearing
will be held in April when the draft version of the plan is presented to
the City Council.
Building Improvement Grants Approved
The City Council approved three $75,000 economic development building
improvement grants that are expected to help establish downtown as a
food and entertainment district, as well as to create more jobs in the
area. Parrish Street Venture will renovate the building at 106 West
Parrish Street so it can be used for retail, office and residential
purposes. Empire Alliance will renovate a building at 320 East Chapel
Hill Street for retail, office, and residential use and TND Capital
Management will renovate a building at 624 Foster Street for use as a
restaurant.
City Improves Safety at Two Durham Intersections
The City is taking significant steps to improve safety at two Durham
intersections. The City Council approved a $326,267 contract for the
installation of traffic signals with mast arms at the intersection of
Broad and Perry Streets and Carver Street at Stadium Drive. City staff
decided the signals were necessary after an increase in serious
accidents at the intersections several years ago. Temporary signals have
been in place at each location since then, but the new signals will
permanently replace those.
Police Department Receives Grant to Help At-Risk Youth
The Durham Police Department is once again receiving help from the Fox
Family Foundation to expand its volunteer services to at-risk youth and
their families. The department will use a $5,000 grant to focus on teens
that are most at-risk of committing violent crimes or joining gangs.
Some of the programs to be supported include the North Carolina Response
Initiative, the Police Athletic League, Project Safe Neighborhood youth
events, and crime prevention events targeting youth.
Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":
* Dept. of Water Management Deputy Director Vicki Westbrook,
Water Quality Manager John Cox, and Deputy City Attorney Karen Sindelar
- Explain what the Falls Lake rules mean to Durham now that they are in
effect.
* Dept. of Water Management Conservation Coordinator Al Nelson -
Explains why the City is expanding its toilet rebate program.
* Dept. of General Services Director Joel Reitzer - Explains why
the City and County are considering whether a new management company
should take over operation of the Durham Convention Center.

residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall. Each edition
is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day after
City Council meetings. It airs three times a day on DTV8 (Time Warner
Cable channel 8) through the week of the next City Council meeting. For
