Taxpayers Advised to Choose Payment Options Wisely

Durham, NC - Durham County's Tax Administration Office offers multiple options for paying tax bills.  While there are many ways to a make payment, the tax department urges citizens to choose their payment method wisely.  Recently, the County's Tax Office discovered that when some residents use their personal bank's bill payment system, they are incorrectly keying government entity and address information.  The information error is not identified until the taxpayer realizes that their payment is not posted to their tax bill.  In the latest case of a misdirected payment, the taxpayer used their bank's bill pay system.  The taxpayer soon received a delinquent tax notice.  After tracking down who processed the check sent via their bank's bill pay system, it was realized that their payment went to their water bill for the City of Durham instead of their property tax bill.   Misdirected payments can lead to further unforeseen problems for the taxpayer.  When the tax bill is paid late, interest accrues on the account.  By the time the mistake is spotted, it is too late to help the citizen. "We have no authority by statutes to remove the interest on late payments," said Kimberly Simpson, tax administrator for the Durham County Tax Administration Office.  "It is imperative for citizens to key the correct payee and address for the intended payment to reach the correct local government for processing."  Simpson reminds citizens of the following payment options that are alternatives to the personal bank bill pay system: Payment through e-services - E-services enables the taxpayer to make payments using an e-check on line, free of charge.  The County's E-services option is offered through a secure site.  Instructions on how to pay online can be found printed on each bill.  Details on how to pay with a credit card are available on the Tax Administration website.  A processing fee applies to credit card transactions. Pay by mail - Payments mailed to the County's Tax Administration Office, can be sent to Post Office Box 30090, Durham, NC 27702.  Taxpayers must include the coupon found at the bottom of their tax bill or a copy of a tax notice with their payment sent to the aforementioned post office box.  To get a receipt for taxes paid, or a copy of your bill to make payment, visit the Tax Administration website.   Payment in person- While payment through e-services is strongly encouraged as a convenient way to make payment and avoid long payment lines, citizens can also visit the Tax Administration Office to make a payment in person.  The Tax Administration Office is located on the first floor of the Durham County Administration Building, located at 200 East Main Street.   Payment at a tax kiosk - The County's Tax Payment Kiosks are located at Northgate Mall across from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.  Another kiosk is located in the Tax Administration Office lobby.
