[Durham INC] Learn about the DPS Budget for 2011-2012

I personally am very concerned about charter schools that don't offer transportation or meals (a good way to keep out needy families!). I think that if we are lifting the cap on the number of charter schools across the state, the money the state gives to schools needs to be more "itemized" -- extra to support transportation, meals, a high proportion of kids that get free lunch, and/or a full Exceptional Children program (including self-contained classes, for example). Any school that doesn't do the full range of services gets less money than the public schools. It probably wouldn't mean more for DPS, but it would help charters that are struggling to meet the needs of our most needy families.
Regards, pat

See below. Our schools are going to be facing severevfed and state cuts this year, not to mention possible push towards privatization. Parents need to educate themselves now and start figuring out where their most dire concerns lie, and making these known. The PTA meeting below is a good start.

If we citizens are expected to advocate for more funding for our public schools, we should demand complete transparency with regard to the DPS budget, including superintendents, asst supers, directors, etc., in order to counter/understand why the county always says that DPS is top-heavy and needs to better manage their funds.

I hope some of you can make this important meeting.

On Tuesday, February 15th the Durham PTA Council will hold a joint meeting with the Durham Allies for Responsive Education (DARE) at the Staff Development Center from 6-7:30pm.

The purpose of the meeting is three-fold:

1) To inform about the severe budgetary issues facing DPS - this will be addressed by a staff member from DPS.

2) To offer a chance for students, teachers, parents and others to share their thoughts on the budget, what is happening at their schools as far as class size, specials, needs, facilities, etc.

3) Set the beginning of a course for advocacy at the state and local level.

We would appreciate you attending this meeting, as we prepare our advocacy strategies to ensure our schools and our kid's education are"funded first." We have asked members of the DPS budget advisory committee to attend this meeting to be on
 hand to answer questions.
