Durham Hosts European Leaders March 8

Leadership Development Program Allows Europe's Emerging Leaders to Explore the United States

DURHAM, N.C. - Next week, five emerging leaders from Europe will get a chance to explore and learn more about Durham's educational institutions, the arts, and diverse culture thanks to the efforts of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and the City of Durham's Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

On Tuesday, March 8, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Durham will host five European Marshall Fellows, who will be treated to a showcase of many of Durham's famous locations, including the Hayti Heritage Center; the North Carolina Central University Museum of Art; downtown cultural sites, including the Carolina Theatre, the Durham Performing Arts Center, CCB Plaza, and the historic American Tobacco Campus; the Durham Arts Council; Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art; the Sara P. Duke Gardens; Duke Chapel, and the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science.

European Marshall Memorial Fellows visit the Triangle annually through the GMF, which is a nonpartisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting greater cooperation and understanding between the United States and Europe. The Marshall Memorial Fellowship, GMF's flagship leadership development program, provides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders from the United States and Europe to explore policies, institutions, and culture on the other side of the Atlantic. Founded in 1982, the program has attracted over 2,000 of the best and brightest from all sectors, including politics, media, business, and nongovernmental organizations. GMF awards the Marshall Memorial Fellowships to over 100 transatlantic leaders each year.

Since the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development has a long-term working relationship with the International Affairs Council (IAC) of North Carolina and the GMF, the department is helping to coordinate the visit for the five European Marshall Memorial Fellows next week. The five fellows visiting Durham are Simona De Martino, first secretary of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Richard Kvasňovský, chief editor of Domestic Affairs for the News Agency of the Slovak Republic; Sandrine Nelissen Grade, head of European Affairs in Belgacom; Jean Richard de Latour, finance inspector at the General Finance Inspection, the consulting and audit body attached to the French Ministries of Finance and Budget; and Assia Traytcheva-Vulcheva, attaché for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bulgaria.
