Durham Sponsors Water Efficiency Clinics at Local Home Improvement
Stores

Free Water Efficiency Devices Available at Clinics in Recognition of
National Fix-a-Leak Week

DURHAM, N.C. - Water lost through drips and leaks can impact water
efficiency, but these repairs are often overlooked in homes and
businesses.

To raise awareness of water conservation, the City of Durham is
partnering with local home improvement stores to provide free water
efficiency clinics during National Fix-a-Leak Week, March 14 - 20, 2011.
These clinics will offer residents free water savings devices that are
not typically available in home improvement stores, valuable tips on
developing water-efficient behaviors, and information on the City's
toilet rebate program.

The City's Water Management Department will host four Water Efficiency
Clinics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:

* March 15: The Home Depot at North Pointe (1700 N. Pointe
Drive, Durham)

* March 16: The Home Depot at Patterson Place (3701 Mt. Moriah
Road, Durham)

* March 17: Lowe's Home Improvement (117 William Penn Plaza,
Durham)

*         March 18:  Lowe's Home Improvement (4402 Fayetteville Road,
Durham)

"Leaks account for large quantities of water wasted in the home every
year, and we are excited about partnering with our local home
improvement stores to promote National Fix-a-Leak Week," said Al Nelson,
conservation coordinator with the City's Water Management Department.
"Residents who take advantage of our water efficiency clinics will not
only learn how to identify leaks to save water, but they can also learn
how to potentially save hundreds of dollars per year on their water
bills."

The Water Efficiency Clinics will also focus on how residents and
businesses can save money and reduce water usage by participating in the
City's WaterSense High Efficiency Toilet Rebate Program. The program is
available to both residential and business customers. The program offers
rebates valued at $100 for qualified water customers who replace their
existing toilets with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
WaterSense-labeled, high-efficiency toilet models. The rebate program is
limited to high-efficiency toilets on the EPA's WaterSense list, which
use an average of 1.28 gallons per flush. Any toilet that meets the
criteria, and was purchased after January 1, 2008, will be eligible for
the rebate. Rebates will be applied as credits to customer's water bill.
