Durham Crop Walk
25% of the funds raised will stay in Durham and help with food assistance
through such groups as the Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Urban Ministries.
75% of the funds will go to overseas projects such as the sand dams in Kenya
and other dry areas to preserve and protect water that falls as
precipitation. There are also programs such as health care for pregnant
women and literary grants since women comprise the large majority of the
poorest people.

READING AND BOOK SIGNING WITH ALLEN TULLOS / Alabama Getaway: The Political
Imaginary and the Heart of Dixie
In Alabama Getaway Allen Tullos explores the recent history of one of the
nation¹s most conservative states to reveal its political imaginarythe
public shape of power, popular imagery, and individual opportunity.
Tullos ³deepens our understanding of Alabama even while convincing us there
is little reason for optimism about its governance. Yet he gives due credit
for the civil rights gains that represent Alabama's greatest achievement.
Bravo!² says veteran journalist Howell Raines. ³This is a masterful book
about a wounded, neurotic, maddening andfor those of us born to its soilan
enduringly lovable place."

ALEX HARRIS / After the Storm: Post-Katrina Photographs
Six months after Hurricane Katrina, Alex Harris, Duke University professor
of the practice of public policy and documentary studies, drove to New
Orleans hoping to capture images of spring. The devastation that persisted
required a different response, inspiring this series of triptychs of the
abandoned and battered Gulf Coast.
³Policymakers and photographers have at least one problem in common: how to
engage the imaginations of our fellow citizens, to focus on places and
problems they might otherwise turn away from,² Harris says.

ROB AMBERG / Sodom Laurel Album
Sodom Laurel Album features a selection of photographs from Rob Amberg¹s
book of the same name, published by the Center for Documentary Studies at
Duke University and the University of North Carolina Press in 2002, in which
he explores the lives around him in his adopted home of Madison County,
North Carolina. He began his work there with little more than an insistent
desire to become a photographer. Young, romantic, and full of dreams, he
discovered his place in the western mountains of North Carolina, where he
settled and found ways to stay, and began a double journey, looking outward
to the world of Dellie Norton, Junior, and the community of Sodom Laurel and
inward to his own vision, purpose, and integrity.
Rob Amberg lives and works in Madison County, North Carolina.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources¹ (DENR) will make a
presentation and hold a question and answer session about the demolishing of
the ³BB&T² building, at the corner of Watts St and Club Blvd. (The building
is also known as the former Tharrington¹s building and Word of Faith
Church.)
The site is contaminated with dry cleaning chemicals, including Perc. Upon
DENR¹s request the City of Durham condemned the building because of its high
level of toxicity.
Brogden Middle School Auditorium
1101 LEON STREET
We need to good turn out at the public meeting to show DENR of peoples¹
interest and concern, to raise questions and make comments.
I will provide more details soon but in the meantime if you would like more
information, to learn how you and/or any organizations you are involved with
can become involved please call me at 403-2248. I would really appreciate
any assistance. There is a Trinity Park Neighborhood Association Perc
Committee, of which I am a member.
There will be a public hearing about the plans for ³remediating the site² at
another time.
