Scrappers

Set in Chicago¹s labyrinth of alleys, Scrappers is a vérité portrait of
Oscar and Otis, two metal scavengers who search for a living with brains,
brawn, and battered pickup trucks. The 2008 financial collapse and
crackdowns on undocumented immigrants jeopardize their means of providing
for their families.

The film questions popular notions of poverty, race relations, and
recycling, while examining dreams of personal self-sufficiency and urban
sustainability. Scrappers looks at daily life as it tackles the geography of
a still-segregated city, the hidden lives of undocumented immigrants, and
the complex economics of recycling. www.cdsporch.org/archives/3459

Living for 32 / A Survivor of the Virginia Tech Shooting Massacre Takes on
Gun Violence

Living for 32 is the story of Colin Goddard, a 21-year-old senior at
Virginia Tech who was shot four times in April 2007 by a lone gunman whose
rampage killed 32, wounded 17, and caused incidental injury to six more as
they jumped from windows to escape the barrage of bullets. Goddard grew
intensely passionate about working against easy access to deadly weapons.
Goddard went to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation¹s
largest hand gun control organization, and volunteered to go undercover with
a hidden camera to gun shows across America, to prove how easy it is for
anyone to buy a gun, with no identification and no background check.

After the screening, a Q&A will include Effie Steele, a local Durham
activist who lost her niece to gun violence; Dr. Phil Cook, Sanford School
of Public Policy; Dr. Kristen Goss, Sanford School of Public Policy; and
Shannon Ritchie, Duke student and activist.

MARK JONATHAN HARRIS / ³Documentary Explorations² by a Veteran Filmmaker and
Oscar Winner

Documentary filmmaker Mark Jonathan Harris, will present a retrospective of
his career, show film clips, and answer questions from the audience.

Harris is best known for directing the Oscar-winning feature documentaries
The Long Way Home, which documents what happened to concentration camp
survivors in the period immediately following their liberation; and Into the
Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport, which chronicles
Britain¹s rescue mission of 10,000 predominantly Jewish children in the nine
months prior to World War II.

Harris¹s early films document some of the most important and contentious
political issues of the 1960s. Huelga! is a portrait of Cesar Chavez¹s
United Farmworkers Union and the first year of the union¹s historic Delano
grape strike. The Oscar-winning short documentary The Redwoods presents the
Sierra Club¹s successful case for establishing a Redwoods National Park. The
Foreigners explores the work of a group of Peace Corps volunteers
confronting the contradictions of U.S. foreign policy as they try to bring
about social change in Colombia.

Later films include The Homefront, which examines the social and economic
impact of World War II on this country and Unchained Memories: Readings from
the Slave Narratives, a look at slavery in America. Recently, he produced
the award-winning Darfur Now and executive produced the Oscar-nominated
Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders.
