Grand Opening Festival and Ribbon Cutting at Community Garden in Durham

The Briggs Avenue Community Garden, located in the 1300 block of South Briggs Avenue in Durham, will host a public grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting on Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Guest speakers for the event include: Delphine Sellars, director of the Durham County Cooperative Extension Ellen Reckhow, vice chairman of the Durham Board of County Commissioners William V. 'Bill' Bell, mayor of Durham Jim Cowden, director of the North Central District Cooperative Extension Dr. Keith Baldwin, director of the Western District Cooperative Extension Dr. William Ingram, president of Durham Technical Community College Sharon Rowland, director of Resource Development of the North Carolina Agriculture Foundation Laura Hodges, plot owner at the Briggs Avenue Community Garden Michelle Wallace, consumer horticulture agent for the Durham County Cooperative Extension Santos Flores, coordinator of the Briggs Avenue Community Garden The garden, designed to be a fitness trail in the future, provides a location for those that want to secure a garden plot as a means for producing healthy and easily accessible fresh food choices to increase food security. The community garden also offers a great option for residents to enhance their physical activity levels while helping to build a unique image and community identity for the Briggs Avenue Community Garden. According to Michelle Wallace, extension agent with the Cooperative Extension for Durham County, the community garden offers a unique blend of activity options to visitors of all ages. "The community garden gives Durham residents a timely solution to the economic downturn and increased rates of obesity," Wallace said. "The multi-use garden is a safe and beautiful area for residents to grow produce and a unique location for recreational and community activities." All residents are invited to attend the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony to enjoy numerous educational booths and demonstrations covering topics related to vegetable gardening, critter management, soil and fertilizers, water conservation, and nutrition provided by Durham County Extension Master Gardeners. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own garden pot to plant starter veggie garden transplants given away for free, while they last. Chef Tiffany Griffin, food writer for Carpedurham and comowater.com, will provide a food demonstration using fresh seasonal produce. A local personal trainer will also be on site to display to attendees the garden callisthenic exercises necessary to get ready for spring planting. Residents interested in securing a raised-bed garden plot to grow their own fruits, flowers and vegetables, will be given access to information about criteria to use the location. Applications will be available during the grand opening events.
