[Durham INC] A touching story about Randy Pickle

Randy 'collected' stuff.

One of his most recent 'projects' was helping a family sign business that was going out of business to recycle a s---load of plastic and metal.

It's my understanding that TROSA had come by on Friday and was able to remove most of it for Jackie (except for a lone Bojangles sign still in the driveway).

Randy also had mentioned that he was trying to help Jackie with a move up to Asheville to be closer to her mom.

Not sure where we can help, but just being available to move stuff and find 'connections' to non-profits that might have a need for some of those items might be helpful enough.

  It was a beautiful service, especially the eulogy given by Joe Chambliss.
  At the reception at Randy's house, I thought his dad spoke for all of us, "We weren't ready".

  No, Mr. Pickle, we weren't ready either. Rather doubt we imparted upon his father the true impact his son had made on Durham. Probably impossible to quantify that effect anyway.

  I liked the suggestion made by his neighborhood's listserv, or listserver as Randy always preferred to call it.
  A neighbor suggested trying to find out what projects he was in the middle of and completing them.

  At the reception, Mitch Fisher mentioned the last time he saw Randy, he was delivering a couple signs, "ORDER HERE", destined for King's Hot Dog stand. What was Randy doing ordering King's signs? 
  Easy, Randy thought the signs would improve a great thing, so he likely would have installed them as well. 

  I'll make sure that project gets completed, keep a look out for others.

  Might come as a relief to some, but there won't be another like him. Durham has no shortage of passionate citizens, but it lost some horse power with Randy's passing. (OK, Bull power)

  I will miss his informed debate.

    I remember socializing with Randy on many INC-related occasions. It got to where I sought him out because it was so entertaining to be around him -- it always dissipated any awkwardness from being in a large room filled with people I didn't know very well. As I've told Randy, he is/was a character in a novel -- a very round, engaging character. He had a way with words, particularly when he was speaking them in person over cocktails. 

    The world is a different place without him -- I can feel his absence already...it will take some time to rebalance.

    I suspect many of us have lots of stories, but I really want to share this one from a neighbor in Watts Hospital.

    I only met Randy Pickle once, but it was a memorable meeting and I'd like to share it.

    This past Christmas I was building a play kitchen for my 2 year old daughter. I had nearly everything I needed except for a faucet for the sink. Buying a new one just seemed crazy, but I couldn't find a used one
    anywhere.

    I followed up on several leads from a last minute plea to the WHHNA list, but I didn't quite get what I was looking for, and I had pretty much given up hope. Randy and I had played phone tag earlier in the day,
    but it seemed all sorts of logistical miracles would have to happen for us to meet up. My last call to him was to say that it was late and to not worry about it.

    Either he never got the message or just decided to ignore it. Looking not unlike Santa himself, I found Randy at my door at 10:15 pm on
    Christmas Eve holding a tiny little bar sink with matching faucet.

    It was our Christmas miracle, and we had Randy Pickle to thank for it.
