Durham Reports Paper Shredding & E-Waste Event Success

Residents Reminded to Recycle Year-Round at City Facilities

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents and businesses came out in force on
Sunday and made the free paper shredding and electronic scrap (e-waste)
recycling event at the Durham Earth Day Festival a huge success.

According to Donald Long, director of the City's Solid Waste Management
Department, approximately 500 vehicles dropped off over 25,000 pounds of
e-waste, such as computers and televisions, and nearly 26,000 pounds of
paper for shredding at the event. This was the second year that
residents and businesses had the opportunity to bring these items to be
recycled during the Earth Day Festival.

"Many residents gave positive feedback and were excited about the
opportunity to recycle these items in celebration of Earth Day," Long
said. "We would like to thank residents and businesses for supporting
the Shred and E-Waste events and look forward to hosting more events
like this in the future."

Beginning July 1, 2011, new legislation bans electronics from being
disposed of in landfills. Due to this new legislation, the City's Solid
Waste Management Department is proactively providing residents with
opportunities to properly dispose of these items. This year, the City
has diverted nearly 85,000 pounds of e-waste and over 56,000 pounds of
paper from landfills with recycling events provided by the City.

Durham residents who missed Sunday's event at can still safely and
conveniently recycle their old computers and televisions. The City's
Solid Waste Management Department is reminding residents that computers
and televisions are accepted for recycling throughout the entire year at
the City's Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility, located at
1900 E. Club Blvd., is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 6
p.m. and Thursdays through Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more details about other items accepted at this facility, contact
Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200 or visit the City's website at
