[Durham INC] Comprehensive Plan Meetings -- Questions, questions, and more questions....

Unfortunately I cannot make the INC meeting tomorrow night -- just too much
going on with the kids, particularly at the end of the school year.
I was wondering if the INC might want to get involved in the Comprehensive Plan
discussions/meetings. Admittedly, I am unable to volunteer myself for this.
Every time these plans have come up for review and I have asked
officials/employees when we citizens could effectively push for certain things,
I am told 'not now.'
So.....is this finally the time to demand these things?
In particular, we have talked about:
1) Retraction of the urban growth line in South Durham and possibly other areas
(for protection against urban sprawl in our few remaining rural suburban areas,
for protection of our natural resources and water supply, and to encourage/cause
more desperately needed in-fill development)
and
2) Restricting Comprehensive Plan and other such amendments to once every 2 or
3 years. As Don Moffitt underscored well when he ran for County
Commissioner, right now our 'plans' hold no water because they are so easily
changed piece-meal to suit developers (as each new development tries to
circumvent/avoid any plans that may restrict what they want to do). The public
can't possibly keep up with the incessant changes that are made as a result, nor
can the public keep up its momentum in this regard.
Do any of you know anything about the Comprehensive Plan meetings with planning?
Is it really worth the tremendous effort for me to make one of these? (I haven't
felt that it has resulted in anything meaningful in the past).
Most importantly, do any of you know of anything that raises a red flag -- for
instance, any planned alterations to our CP that may reduce protections from
environmentally irresponsible sprawl and/or increases the potential for
clear-cutting and mass-grading (at the likely expense of in-fill development)?
Thanks!
Melissa
