Durham Names New Public Works Director
DURHAM, N.C. - City Manager Tom Bonfield announced today that Marvin G.
Williams of Richmond, Va. has been appointed as the new director of the
City's Public Works Department.
The department consists of three divisions, including Engineering,
Street Maintenance, and Stormwater Services. Williams will be
responsible for directing multiple priorities, including the City's
repaving efforts, construction inspection and review activities, and
stormwater and watershed improvement efforts.
"We're excited to have Marvin join our team since he brings more than 12
years of experience and knowledge in Transportation and Public Works to
our organization," Bonfield said. "One of the top priorities right now
is to fulfill this Administration's promise to repave miles of city
streets over the next two paving seasons. The City is also working to
comply with recent State laws that greatly affect the Stormwater
Services Division and its work to impact the water quality of Jordan and
Falls Lakes. The department is also working to finish incomplete
developments so residents living in these neighborhoods have completed
infrastructure and a better quality of life. Marvin's expertise will
ensure that the Public Works Department can get the job done on all of
these different fronts."
Prior to joining the City, Williams was the deputy director of Public
Works for the City of Richmond, Va.; director of Public Works for the
City of Deland, Fla.; project engineer for VMS Maintenance Systems, Inc.
in Monticello, Fla.; project engineer for the Griffith Company in Santa
Fe Springs, Calif.; assistant transportation engineer for the San Diego
Metropolitan Transit Development Board in San Diego; and transportation
engineer for the California Department of Transportation (District 11)
in San Diego.
Williams received his bachelor's of science degree in Civil Engineering
from San Diego State University in San Diego. He received his
Certificate of Completion from the American Public Works Association
Florida Chapter's Public Works Institute for Leadership at Indian River
State College in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Williams replaces former Director Katie Kalb, who retired in July 2010.
He will join the City on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.
