Fast Facts:
* The Durham City-County Planning Department is seeking resident
and stakeholder input and guidance in crafting Durham's first-ever Urban
Open Space Plan. Once completed, the plan will address open space needs
in the Downtown, Compact Neighborhood, and Urban Tiers of the Unified
Development Ordinance (UDO).
* The charrette scheduled for June 8th will focus on the
Downtown portion of the plan and is the second in a series of events
geared toward generating ideas and information on how residents and
visitors live, work, and play in between downtown's buildings. Planners
want to know the public's opinion on what the vision should be for urban
open space, which can be quite different from more conventional suburban
and rural open space.
* The planned exercise for this charrette will ask participants
to visit the following areas to describe what physical qualities appeal
or detract from its use as an open space as well as to describe what
that space could be. A map of the following locations can be downloaded
at www.DurhamNC.gov/Departments/Planning/pdf/Open_Space_Invite.pdf.
o CCB Plaza
o Five Points Plaza
o Green space by Bull McCabe's Pub
o American Tobacco Campus Lawn
o Parking lot behind Pinhook
o Parking lot by Trinity Methodist Church
o Parking lot between Orange and Mangum Streets
o Rotary Park
o Green space by railroad corridor
o Central Park
o Center City Plaza
* Depending on the input received from residents at the open
house events and staff analysis, there may be recommendations to amend
the UDO regarding open space provisions in the Downtown, Compact
Neighborhood, and Urban Tiers.
* For additional information on this plan or the June 8th
charrette, contact either Tom Dawson or Anne Kramer with the Durham
City-County Planning Department at (919) 560-4137 or via e-mail at
