Durham County Library Kicks Off 2011 Summer Reading Club
Everyone Is Invited to Share 'One World, Many Stories'

DURHAM- Durham County Library invites children, teens and adults to take a trip around the world during this year's Summer Reading Club adventures. The 2011 summer reading theme is 'One World, Many Stories' and the library has planned an exciting summer of world class reading fun. Everyone will get an opportunity to 'visit and explore' any continent, country, city, town or village to learn about world cultures, dress, food, music and more. To celebrate the kickoff of the season, Family Reading Festivals will be held at every library throughout Durham County. Each festival will have a carnival feel and will feature activities, games, refreshments, giveaways, music connected to the world theme and free RIF books for children.

The kickoff schedule is as follows:
Friday, June 17, 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Bragtown Library and Family Literacy Center, 3200 Dearborn Dr.
McDougald Terrace Community Library, 1101 Lawson St.

Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
East Regional, 211 Lick Creek Lane
North Regional, 221 Milton Rd.
South Regional, 4505 S. Alston Ave.
Southwest Regional, 3605 Shannon Rd.
Stanford L. Warren Branch, 1201 Fayetteville St.
Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

"Research shows that reading during the summer months may help students increase or maintain their grades," said Karlene Fyffe, the library's Youth Services Administrator. "We want to encourage every family to carve out time to read together this summer."
>From June 17 through August 13, Summer Reading Club participants will be encouraged to read at their own pace and log their reading time. Participants will be eligible for a variety of weekly, monthly and grand prizes. Every Durham County Library will offer themed programs and activities to engage and motivate families to experience a world of reading fun! Programs will feature puppets, magic, drama, music, ventriloquism, writing workshops and science camps.
Children ages 0-11 who read, or are read to, for 15 minutes every day will be eligible to receive prizes for 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and 40 days of reading. Children who reach the 40-day level will be eligible for the grand prize drawing at a grand finale. Teens 12-17 must read for a total of 30 hours during the summer. In order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing, teens must also submit at least one book review. Adults 18 and over will receive stamps in their "passports" for reading books or using the library's online resources. Two stamps earn a raffle ticket for the prize drawings. For children and teens, grand prizes include personal computers, laptops, Nook books, iPods and DVD players. Adults can win a digital camera.
For the first time this year, the library will also host an "Are We There Yet?" Pit Stop Rally on July 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Library.
"The rally will be a midway pit stop to refuel, refresh, reenergize and encourage families to reach their reading goals," said Fyffe.
Then, on August 12 and 13, the library will reward everyone for a summer of reading fun with the system-wide grand finale "Celebrations of Reading." There will be more games, music, crafts and refreshments to finish the season with a bang, and the Summer Reading Club grand prize winners will be announced at each location.
