City of Durham to Close Part of Duke Street for Repairs June 15 - July 8

Detours Necessary to Remove Trees Prior to Street and Sidewalk Repairs

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning Wednesday, June 15, Durham motorists should
note temporary detours on Duke Street as the City of Durham makes
repairs to the street and sidewalk.

Duke Street will be closed between West Proctor Street and Morehead
Avenue with traffic detours in place for three weeks. Normal traffic
will resume on Duke Street on Friday, July 8. The street closure will
take place daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the detour will be in effect
during this timeframe. Motorists are encouraged to follow the detour
signs that will be posted at University Road and Duke Street.

The City will remove four trees as part of this project, all of which
have large roots that are damaging Duke Street and the adjacent
sidewalk. The tree removal will take place between June 21 and June 23.
According to Michael Hughes, assistant engineering manager with the
City's Public Works Department, the four trees along South Duke Street
near West Proctor Street have caused severe damage to City and State
infrastructure and must be removed as part of this project. "The repair
to the street and sidewalk is a priority to make travel safe for
motorists and pedestrians and bring this sidewalk back in compliance
with the Americans Disabilities Act," Hughes said. "The tree roots have
grown under the sidewalk and into the travel lanes in a way that make it
impossible to consider other alternatives, because ultimately we try to
avoid removing trees. We do plan to plant new trees in the fall."

For more information about this project, contact Hughes at (919)
560-4326, ext. 30266 or via e-mail at Michael.Hughes at DurhamNC.gov.
