State Legislation Requires Durham to Recycle Televisions and Computer
Equipment
Residents Encouraged to Recycle Electronic Items at City's Waste
Disposal and Recycling Center
DURHAM, N.C.- Beginning July 1, Durham residents can no longer set their
old televisions and computer monitors on the curb with their regular
household garbage due to a new State law prohibiting the disposal of
televisions, computers, and computer accessories into North Carolina
landfills.
The City's Solid Waste Management Department will now provide curbside
collection for televisions by appointment only. Televisions must be 32
inches and above to qualify for curbside collection. A maximum of three
televisions will be collected per scheduled appointment with removal of
televisions taking place on the same day as a resident's garbage
collection. Residents must call Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200 to
schedule a pick up. Electronic waste must be separated from garbage and
other recyclable materials, and should not be placed inside the
recycling cart.
According to Donald Long, director of the City's Solid Waste Management
Department, the department has hosted several electronic waste (e-waste)
recycling events during the past year to proactively address the amount
of e-waste that the City sends to landfills in preparation for this
State legislative mandate. "Through these events, we have diverted
193,102 pounds of electronic waste from landfills. The department plans
to hold more events in the upcoming year to increase recycling of all
e-waste, including banned electronic items, to make it as convenient as
possible to properly dispose of these items," Long said.
Residents are encouraged to recycle televisions smaller than 32 inches,
computers, and computer accessories as well as other electronic waste,
such as toaster ovens, cell phones, irons, radios, and small appliances,
at the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station).
The City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, which is located at 2115
E. Club Blvd, offers free, convenient disposal. The facility is open
Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30
a.m. to 12 p.m. Small, working electronics may also be brought to the
Swap Shop, which is located in the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling
Center.
For information about proper e-waste disposal, visit the City's website
at www.DurhamNC.gov/Departments/Solid/wr_default_new.cfm. To schedule a
collection appointment, contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200.
