Durham Ends Solid Waste Collections Early Today Due To Excessive Heat

Remaining Solid Waste Routes to Receive Pick Up Tomorrow

 

DURHAM, N.C. - With the National Weather Service issuing an excessive
heat watch and forecasting the heat index to reach as high as 107
degrees today, the City of Durham's Solid Waste Management Department
has suspended some collections early.  

 

Crews that work on the manual routes collecting solid waste, recycling,
and yard waste are being suspended. Collections on automated routes will
continue and complete their routes today. The City is asking residents
that are not collected today to leave their carts on the curb.
Collection will resume tomorrow morning and the missed routes will be
given priority.

 

According to Donald Long, director for the City's Solid Waste Management
Department, today's soaring heat has adversely affected some solid waste
employees who were working today. "Safeguarding our collectors' health
is the primary reason for today's temporary schedule change," Long said.
"Although we provide safety training on how to cope with extreme heat,
we know the best way to avoid heat injury is to take our employees out
of the field during the heat of the day. We will resume collection for
any missed routes tomorrow morning, so our customers should leave their
carts on the curb tonight if their collection was missed today."
