DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the August 1, 2011 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
this episode of "City Hall This Week." The show begins airing on Friday,
August 5 at 8 p.m. and will also be available to watch on demand at
www.DurhamNC.gov/DTV8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.
City Begins Initial Improvements for Compliance with Jordan Lake and
Falls Lake Rules
The City is beginning some of the initial improvements needed for
compliance with the Jordan Lake and Falls Lake rules. The City Council
approved a $1,713,284 contract to make the improvements at the North and
South Durham Water Reclamation Facilities. The project includes
replacing channel covers that will help reduce algae growth, which will
in turn reduce costs and staffing needed. It also includes the
installation of instruments and equipment that will allow the plants to
better operate and manage changing plant conditions. Both elements are
part of an enhanced nutrient removal program to reduce the total amount
of nitrogen and phosphorous discharged at the plants.
City to Continue Financial Support for Efforts to Reduce Domestic
Violence
The City will continue to support efforts to ensure that domestic
violence cases are handled as quickly and efficiently in the court
system as possible. The City will pay $84,476 toward salary and benefits
for a district court judge to hear domestic violence cases. It will also
pay $52,228 toward salary and benefits for a victim legal assistant. The
City's Human Relations staff says this specially trained team is an
important part of the effort to reduce domestic violence and to improve
victim safety and offender accountability.
Shade Structure Planned for Durham Central Park
A new feature is being added to Durham Central Park. A $30,000 shade
structure is being donated to the park by Durham Central Park, Inc. The
structure, named The Leaf, is being built in the eastern portion of the
park and was designed by architecture students in the North Carolina
State University School of Design. The facility is expected to primarily
be used on a daily basis as a seating and shade structure. It will also
enable the eastern portion of the park to be used as an amphitheatre
where small performances and movies can take place.
