[Durham INC] City Finds $3.8M for ATT Flying Bridge

I believe this is absolutely an issue for the INC.

We need the bridge over I-40 (which is long overdue) AND our sidewalks. I am really saddened by my inability to walk with my kids to Southpoint mall due to the lack (or disconnection) of sidewalks along busy roads like Herndon and Barbee.

What's the point of funding public transportation when the public can't safely walk from one place to another when they get there. The city is slowly annexing all of the county...we need sidewalks in these newly annexed places just as much as we need them in the city center.

P.S. I sincerely apologize for my absence at the last INC meeting. I had truly hoped to be there but forgot that it was 'meet-the-teacher' night for my two kids. Had to stick with the family commitments...

There is a proposal from the City Planning department to shift $3.8M from neighborhood sidewalk projects to fund the shortfall for the flying bridge over  I-40 on the ATT.

The article says this proposal will be presented to the BPAC and the Open Space and Trail Commission.

It is a subject for INC??

Save our sidewalks, please

As a resident of Birchwood Heights community and Durham County, I was amazed to see “City Funds 3.8M for Tobacco Trails,” “funds come from sidewalk project.” 

City official channels funds while small communities are in need. Our community was part of the Turnkey III Housing Project over 30 years ago. We have a youth community center which the city assisted in remodeling and provided funding for Parks and Recreation to provided programs. 

The programs were stopped without clear reasons and when city officials are questioned, they don’t know what happened! 

If there are funds for trails, I know there’s funds to support youth after-school and summer programs. 

We also requested a sidewalk on Lynn Road from Hwy. 98 to Hursey Street, to the city basketball court and park. The youth need to travel to the park and local stores without walking in the street. So, while city officials channel funds to build trails, can residents be assisted with safe passage from city traffic? 

We keep asking for assistance and no one is listening.
