First, thank you to all the folks who sent me the letter in question, per
my request.
Second, just FYI to Darius, Durham is comprised of closer to 200
neighborhoods, but we should be preparing for 600, because someday we'll probably
have that many.
Now on to the meat of the issue:
I think it's always a wise move for the INC President to include the actual
resolution passed by the neighborhoods along with any comments. I
personally like the language Tom constructed, however my neighborhood never voted
on it. That said, the content of Tom's well spoken letter is not
substantially different from the passed resolution, in fact it is a rather eloquent
summary of it.
Dick, let me offer a suggestion. You've only attended one INC meeting, and
your neighborhood never voted on this particular matter, but that doesn't
mean you are less welcome to voice your concerns the way you have.
Expressing opinions is encouraged at INC, as you will find.
If you are ever elected President of INC, you'll have a chance to lead and
communicate with elected officials on behalf of the member neighborhoods.
You'll find the need to summarize the neighborhood's collective position on
various issues, and if your summary is not to the liking of any of them
you will hear from them ~ just as we are hearing from you now. That's a good
thing. INC leadership is best conducted in a glass jar surrounded by vocal
activists. I think INC operates very close to that ideal, and think you'll
agree in time.
My suggestion is that you take that time. Doesn't mean you should remain
silent when you disagree, even if it is your first meeting, no sir, we
expect to hear from you right from the start. So remain vocal, but take note of
how INC operates effectively, because I believe {in time} you'll discover it
does.
And if you ever become President, you'll have the opportunity to
editorialize from inside the glass jar surrounded by activists as vocal as yourself.

Tom,
I believe you need to either not send the letter you posted or immediately
disavow it as representing the position of INC.
INC adopted a resolution to oppose the amendment emphasizing positive
values. We did not attack anyone, compare the amendment to any historical
events nor issue a call to deal with any issues beyond the proposed amendment.
It appears the letter reflects your personal views, mirroring much of what
you said at the meeting where the resolution was adopted. It does not
reflect the adopted views of INC.
Beyond the material differences between your letter and the resolution, I
am alarmed that a community organization such as INC would appear to
characterize views held by many of our neighbors, friends and their organizations
as hateful and bigoted. You may be intolerant of dissent on this issue,
but INC can hardly afford to be.
We adopted a resolution, which can be sent to our legislators and
otherwise publicized. Your letter appears to represent your opinions and INC
should not be yoked to it.
I told my Board what was adopted. I hope to be able to tell them that
your letter has been withdrawn and that the INC position will be accurately
represented.
Also I need to tell them that a protocol has been put in place to prevent
any similar misrepresentation in the future.
Personally I am really upset to see such a divisive polemic on a day when
all Americans are reliving the effects of intolerance and hatred from ten
years ago.
Best
Dick
