Durham's Minority Enterprise Development Week October 3-7
President of Duke Energy North Carolina Speaks at Awards Luncheon;
Registration Deadline September 23rd
DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham and the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with multiple community agencies, will observe Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week, October 3-7, 2011.
Special events include an awards luncheon; two seminars focusing on emerging markets; a multicultural business after-hours reception; a business trade fair; "Golf with a Minority Business Day;" and, new for this year, a "Meet the Purchasers" speed networking event. This year's theme is "Emerging Industries and Markets: A Blueprint for Success."
This year's awards luncheon will feature guest speaker Brett Carter, president of Duke Energy North Carolina. "We are very excited that Mr. Carter will speak at our awards luncheon this year," said Deborah Giles, director of the City's Equal Opportunity/Equity Assurance Department. "He has a distinguished career advancing his company's rate and regulatory initiatives as well as managing state and local regulatory and governmental relations, economic development, and community affairs. Given the changing dynamics in his industry, Mr. Carter is an ideal speaker for this year's theme."
Carter is a member of the governor-appointed North Carolina State Ports Authority Board and the North Carolina Economic Development Board. He also serves on the board of directors for the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and the North Carolina Affiliate of Fifth Third Bank.
MED Week celebrates the achievements of minority entrepreneurs and affirms government, business, and community organizations' commitment to the principle of equal opportunity. Since 1983, the president has proclaimed a national MED Week observance to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of minority business enterprises and to honor those corporations and financial institutions supporting minority business development.
"Minority and women businesses are part of the backbone of our economy. This annual observance is an opportunity for all residents to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of minority and women business enterprises to the quality of life we enjoy in Durham and support and promote their growth," Giles said. "Through our department, the City has a proven record of supporting minority and women small, disadvantaged business enterprises through various strategies including certification, contract monitoring, and technical assistance."
Durham's local observance is a collaborative effort between the City of Durham, the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, Skanska USA Building, Inc., Durham County Government, the N.C. Institute of Minority Economic Development, the Minority Business Enterprise Center, Duke University/Duke Medicine, Balfour Beatty, Lend Lease, and the Greater Durham Black Chamber of Commerce.
