The Future of Transit -- a walk from home to rail stop
Saturday, October 15 at 9:00 AM
Hike starts at Ninth & Green (free)
Our loop will take us from EK Powe Elementary to the railroad tracks and back (a bit over an hour).
We'll start with Ninth Street North (next phase already approved with neighborhoods support). We'll then walk up to Station Ninth Apartments (approved with neighborhoods support), talk about the Hilton Hotel (approved with neighborhoods support), Erwin Square apartments (approved with neighborhoods support), and mixed use on the west side of Ninth (Ninth Street Plan approved with neighborhoods support).
We'll see where the Ninth Street light rail station is planned, as well as the nearby West Durham commuter rail station. We'll see the routes future commuters would take from these residential projects to their station.
You'll learn some local history and more about transit along the way. Why do Durham neighborhoods change so quickly? Where did the trolley line go? How would new residential buildings mesh with the future rail stations?
Local historian, John Schelp will narrate. Parking is available on streets near Ninth and Green. Well behaved dogs on leashes welcome. No need to register. Rain or shine.
Sponsored by Sierra Club and Durham-Orange Friends of Transit.
