Durham Encourages Bathroom "Mini-Makeovers"

Residents Can Save Water and Money During National Kitchen and Bath
Month

DURHAM, N.C.- Durham residents interested in saving water and money are
encouraged to conduct a "mini-makeover" of a bathroom in October in
celebration of National Kitchen and Bath Month.

In conjunction with National Kitchen and Bath Month, the City of Durham
Water Management Department is urging its water customers to take
advantage of the City's WaterSense High-Efficiency Toilet Rebate
Program. "Bathrooms are the biggest water users in the home, accounting
for more than half of all indoor water use," said Al Nelson,
conservation coordinator with the City's Water Management Department.
"Installing a WaterSense labeled toilet, faucet, and showerhead can save
a family enough water each year to wash six months' worth of laundry and
reduce the amount of energy needed to heat that water - enough to run a
refrigerator for two months."

The City's WaterSense High-Efficiency Toilet Rebate Program is available
to residential, rental, multifamily, commercial, industrial, and
institutional customers. The program offers rebates valued at $100 for
qualified water customers who replace their existing toilets with U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense labeled, high-efficiency
toilet models. WaterSense labeled faucets, showerheads, and toilets are
independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water than
standard models while still delivering the same rinse, spray, or
flushing power consumers expect. These high-efficiency products are
available in a variety of styles, colors, and prices.

Rebates will be applied as credits to customers' water bills. Residents
should allow up to 120 days for rebate credits to be applied to their
account. To apply for the rebate, customers will need to submit all of
the following information:

*         the original dated sales receipt for the toilet;

* a copy of the most recent water bill; and

* a completed Rebate Application Form.

Residents may also purchase WaterSense rated high-efficiency showerheads
for only $3 each from the cashiering counter in the lobby of City Hall,
located at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham.
