[Durham INC] AGENDA for Tuesday Night's Meeting

Chloe,
I'm sorry you're not going to be at the meeting Tuesday, because you've studied this and understand alternatives that have been tried elsewhere better than anyone else I know. And I, too, would like to see the new drawings.
But even if this is an improvement, the contradiction at the heart of it remains:  DOT is agreeing to keep part of Alston three lanes of traffic.  If that's the case, why does it need to be widened at all?  According to the H-S, they are agreeing to sidewalk bump-outs at intersections, bicycle lanes, parking spaces, and no dedicated right turn lanes.  Since the widening will not be used for traffic, explain to me again, why we're widening at all? Is it because the idea was proposed twenty years ago, it has now come to the top of the DOT list, and somehow we can't let go of it?
Judging by the comments in the H-S this morning, I don't think the Council is open to considering anything else.  But the very fact that DOT has come this far ought to give them pause.
John

FYI- there's a news story on Alston Ave this morning: http://heraldsun.com/view/full_story/16148563/article-DOT-bends-on-Alston-widening-?instance=main_article

The summary seems to be that they're going to put down 4 lanes, no dedicated right turn lanes, and stripe the outside lane for parking/bikes. I'm very interested in seeing updated drawings to get all the details, but I don't know when those will be available.

Also, as far as I understand, this new plan is continuing with what was the previous plan to *not* put the road through Los Primos. If they're taking away dedicated right turn lanes, then the intersection at Main and Alston should be narrower, and therefore probably won't impede as much on either the Rescue Mission or Los Primos. But, without drawings, I'm not sure of the details.

Unfortunately, I will be out of town this Tues, but I look forward to reading the minutes from this meeting!
