Durham Chosen to Showcase Achievements at the National League of Cities Expo

Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative to be Recognized

DURHAM, N.C. – The City of Durham has been chosen to showcase its Northeast Central Durham (NECD) Livability Initiative  Partnership for Sustainable Communities at the 2011 National League of Cities Exposition this week. Durham was one of only 24 cities nationwide that was chosen to showcase its achievements during this annual event.

The exposition, scheduled for November 9-12 in Phoenix, Ariz., will recognize city programs that are examples of creative collaborations, increased efficiency, and enhanced quality of life for residents. The programs were chosen in key areas of interest to cities in these difficult economic times and will serve as models for other communities in the areas of economic development, sustainability, infrastructure, and children and families.

This year’s City Showcase, the National League of Cities premier program which celebrates city achievements, will feature the City’s NECD Livability Initiative. Durham will be one of six cities showcased under the Infrastructure Component of the exposition. Infrastructure programs to be highlighted are working to ensure a community’s long-term vitality and prosperity by improving and maintaining transportation, water, technology, and communications systems.

During the conference, City representatives will engage in networking and idea-sharing about implementation strategies, successes, and lessons-learned. Three representatives from the City’s Neighborhood Improvement Services Department and one community leader from the NECD Livability Initiative will display information in the exhibit hall and provide brief informal presentations as a part of the City Showcase.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. It is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. About the Neighborhood Improvement Services Department

The City’s Neighborhood Improvement Services Department works to preserve and improve quality of life conditions for Durham residents, and to encourage active participation in neighborhood redevelopment and public policy and decision making dialogue. The department is responsible for enforcement of quality of life ordinances and state statutes including the City’s Minimum Housing Code; Nonresidential Code; Weedy Lot, Abandoned and Junk Vehicle ordinances; and the State of North Carolina’s Unsafe Building Statute. The department’s rapid responders, known as the Impact Team, remediate non-compliant housing properties; abate public nuisances, such as litter, graffiti, illegal dumping, and abandoned shopping carts; and conduct neighborhood service projects. The department’s Community Engagement staff provides outreach and education to Durham residents and community organizations. Guided by the City’s Strategic Plan, the department helps ensure that Durham has thriving, livable neighborhoods by providing the highest quality of services to engage and educate the community, eradicate blight, ensure safer neighborhoods, and enhance neighborhood revitalization.
