Voters Approve Half-Cent Sales Tax for Public Transportation
A significant expansion is in store for Durham's mass transit system.
Voters approved a half-cent sales tax that will be used only for public
transportation. The increase will go to support bus service expansion
for the Durham Area Transit Authority and Triangle Transit throughout
Durham. It will also support a 37-mile commuter rail system connecting
West Durham, downtown, Research Triangle Park, Cary, Morrisville, West
Raleigh, downtown Raleigh, Garner, to Johnston County. The third
component of the plan is a 17-mile light rail system that would extend
from East Durham, through Alston Avenue, through downtown, Duke
University Medical Center, South Square, U.S. Highway 15-501, U.S.
Highway 54, and into Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina.
More Progress Made in Repairing Streets in City's Failed and Struggling
Developments
Progress continues to be made in repairing streets in the City's failed
and struggling developments. A report by the City's Public Works
Department shows that repairs are being made to the streets at
Stoneybrook Cottages and Lynn Hollow subdivisions. The final asphalt
surface has also been installed at Riverside on the Eno subdivision. The
department will continue to work with the City Attorney's Office to
determine whether there are any other potentially responsible parties
who can complete the work or secure additional funding.
New Recycling Contract Means More Revenue for the City
Durham's recycling efforts will now turn into a revenue-generating
venture for the City. The City Council approved a new two-year contract
with Sonoco Recycling. The company will continue to receive and process
City-collected recyclable materials, but now, Durham will receive a
portion of the profits generated by processing those materials. Solid
Waste Management Department Director Donald Long explains how the
contract will work on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."
