Durham Wins Top Awards at Statewide Communications and Marketing Association Conference

DURHAM, N.C. – The City of Durham’s Office of Public Affairs and Durham Police Department have been recognized with two first place awards and one second place award for communications excellence at a statewide conference held last week.

During its 2011 Annual Seminar, the North Carolina Association of Government Information Officers (NCAGIO) recognized the City’s Office of Public Affairs with first place awards for its 2010 Street Bond Voter Education Campaign and its “Creating Connections” – 2010 Year in Review video. The Durham Police Department also won a second place award for its 2010 annual report, “Behind the Badge.”

For this year’s competition, Durham vied with entries submitted from across North Carolina. According to Beverly B. Thompson, director of the City’s Office of Public Affairs, these three awards recognize the value of well-coordinated education campaigns and effective communication outreach. “Both our office and the police department have small communication staffs, so to be recognized by a statewide association comprised of our colleagues and peers from across North Carolina is a real honor,” Thompson said. “There was competition from around the state for these awards and it is testament to the hard work done by City staff charged with communicating effectively and creatively to our residents.”
