General Services Reminds Customers to use County Issued Recycling Bins
Effective January 1, 2012, Drivers will not Pick Up Recyclables in Oversized Containers.

Durham, NC - Effective January 1, 2012, TFC Recycling Services, Durham County Government's recycling contractor, will no longer collect recyclables from containers not shaped like the 18 gallon rectangular recycling bins supplied by the Durham County Department of General Services.

November 23, 2011

According to the County's Waste Reduction Specialist, Chrissie Koroivui, injuries caused during collection are cited as the reason for change to TFC's collection policy. "Recently, a TFC driver was injured in an attempt to collect from an oversized container," Koroivui said. "As a result, TFC will no longer allow its drivers to make exceptions and collect from containers that are larger than 18 gallons."

To prepare residents in the unincorporated areas of Durham County for these changes to the recycling collection process, TFC drivers will place a warning tag on any recycling container larger than the 18 gallon recycle bin at the roadside beginning the week of November 28.

Upon request, each resident of the unincorporated areas of Durham County is issued an initial 18-gallon recycling bin at no cost. Residents that need additional recycling bins can purchase bins from the Durham County Department of General Services at a cost of $8.00. Alternatively, residents may use similar shaped bins that are no larger than 18 gallons for collection of their acceptable recyclable items.

According to Koroivui, "A Rubbermaid™ container or a laundry basket are examples of bins residents can place at the roadside as a substitute for the standard recycling bin issued by our office."

Residents are reminded that all acceptable recyclables can also be taken to all four of the County of Durham's Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience Sites. The Sites are at the following locations:

Parkwood: Highway 55 & Alexander Drive
Redwood: Redwood Road & Electra Drive
Bahama: Quail Roost Road & Ball Road
Rougemont: Bill Poole Road & Highway 501 North

All sites are open Monday through Saturday, from 7a.m. to 7p.m.

To purchase a recycling bin from the County, residents should call 919-560-0430. For more information about changes to TFC's collections policy, contact Durham County General Services at 919-560-0442 or visit www.durhamcountync.gov and search "Recycle."
