All-Way Stop Added to Intersection on Chapel Hill Road

Chapel Hill Road Near Bivens Street and Jersey Avenue to Receive School
Zone Designation

DURHAM, N.C.-The City of Durham, in partnership with the North Carolina
Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and neighborhood residents,
recently installed an all-way stop at the intersections of Chapel Hill
Road, Bivens Street, and Jersey Avenue.

"This change is needed due to multiple factors along this segment of
roadway," said Phil Loziuk, traffic operations engineer with the City's
Transportation Department. "Previous changes made to the intersection
have slowed traffic by a couple of miles per hour and we hope that the
all-way stop will drastically reduce the sporadic speeding and
occasional accidents along this stretch of state road."

According to Loziuk, repeated traffic studies by the City have shown
that 85 percent of the motorists traveling along this portion of Chapel
Hill Road drive below the posted speed limit. Later this month, this
segment of Chapel Hill Road will receive a school zone designation when
Lakewood Montessori Middle School opens in the old YMCA building.
