Tonight, the DOT will hold a public hearing on rules to implement SB 183, the tree destruction bill.  SB 183 essentially gives the billboard industry the right to clearcut public trees on public right-of-ways. While the bill was reined in thanks to a huge grassroots outcry from citizens and local governments, it is still a very bad bill.

The battle has now moved to rule-making.  As you might expect, industry is seeking to make the rules as favorable to their interest as possible. A review of their filings suggest they want to further remove the ability of local governments to comment and --most importantly -- to have 100% discretion as to if they replant the clearcut areas. 

Look for an action alert soon on this topic. Public comment will be received through Dec. 23.
