Please see below. Perhaps the INC and other organizations will consider taking up a resolution demanding more protection for our floodplains...ideally, prohibiting development in these already flooding areas (and what little remains of Durham areas like this that naturally filter our water and stem the flow of irrigation problems on surrounding, already developed property).

Thanks!

Subject: Zoning case Z1100024 is entirely in a Flood plain

The entire area under consideration for rezoning (4104, 4108, 4110 South Alston Ave) is in a Floodplain. While the rezoning (to IL) may be consistent with many surrounding developments in this area, it is the only one in the floodplain in this area, and the floodplain continues both above (NE) and below (SW) of this area.

I am once again compelled to write the planning commissioners and city council and ask when Durham is going to stop allowing our floodplains to be developed? Given the impairement of our lakes (and the federal mandate to clean these up), it is hard to convince anyone that we are trying to mend any of our environmentally irresponsible development ways when we continue to allow our floodplains to be paved over.

I hope that the city council and the planning commission will consider changing our ordinances to better protect what remains of our floodplains in order to save tax-payers money with regard to flooding/irrigation problems that result on their private properties (from continued development in floodplains and other environmentally sensitive areas) as well as the tremendous (and increasing) amount of money it is costing us to clean up our impaired waterways.

In the meantime, I hope that you will do all you can to prevent development in our floodplains or, at the very least, to ensure that this development is as minimally intrusive as possible.

Sincerely,
Melissa (Rooney)
