Bell Re-Elected Chairman of Metro Mayors Coalition

DURHAM, N.C. - City of Durham Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell was recently
re-elected as the chairman of the N.C. Metropolitan Mayors Coalition, a
group of mayors committed to promoting policies that support the state's
urban centers.

Founded in 2001, the Coalition represents 27 of the state's largest
cities. Its members work together to develop strategies at both the
state and national levels to foster vibrant, livable cities that drive
growth and innovation for the state. Specifically, the group is focused
on economic development, transportation, and public safety.

The Coalition is a powerful voice, shaping legislation in the General
Assembly and encouraging forward-thinking policies. For example, its
members were strong and important advocates for the creation of the N.C.
Mobility Fund, which generates new funding for major transportation
projects of statewide significance. The group has also been active in
pursuing new strategies to reduce the threat of gangs. The Coalition is
currently working with Rep. John Faircloth on legislation giving law
enforcement additional tools to fight illegal gang activities. It passed
the House unanimously and awaits Senate action in the short session.

As chairman, Bell is a visible representative for the Coalition,
frequently conducting media interviews and testifying before the N.C.
General Assembly. He is also an ambassador for the group's priorities,
communicating with legislators, the state's congressional delegation,
and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. As a member of the executive
committee, Bell is active in setting the Coalition's agenda for the
coming year.

Bell was first elected mayor of the City of Durham in 2001 and is
currently serving his sixth term. As mayor, Bell has committed to
improving the community for all its residents. Prior to his election as
mayor, Bell served for 26 years on the Durham County Board of
Commissioners, leading as chairman from 1982 to 1994. A retired IBM
electrical engineer, Bell is the executive vice president and chief
operating officer of UDI/Community Development Corporation. For more
information on Bell, visit
